Chhatrawas

Shiksha (Education)
Active
The word Chhatrawas literally means ‘a student’s residence’ – in essence, a student’s home. The foremost role of a Chhatrawas is to provide an environment where every student feels at home. A Chhatrawas is not merely a place to stay; it must actively contribute to its students' holistic education and character-building.
This work comes under Sahyog (Support), one of the four core pillars of Rashtriya Sewa Bharati, through which Karyakartas support students and families by understanding their needs, providing guidance, and helping them move forward with confidence.

Why Chhatrawas?
A child’s ability to study should not be limited by where they live or what their family can afford.
Many children from bastis, rural and tribal areas, and economically weaker families have to travel long distances for better educational opportunities. In some cases, families may not be able to afford accommodation and other expenses needed for higher education.
Chhatrawas helps bridge this gap. It provides students with a safe, caring place to continue their studies and prepare for the future.

Who Do We Support?
Chhatrawas mainly supports students who need a place to stay to continue their education. These include children and young students from rural and tribal areas, bastis, and families facing financial difficulties.
The focus is not only on helping them complete their education, but also on helping them become confident, disciplined, and self-reliant individuals.

More Than a Place to Stay
Life in a Chhatrawas goes beyond the classroom.
Students follow a regular daily routine that gives proper time to studies, physical activities, yoga, sports, cultural activities, and other learning activities. This routine helps students develop discipline and make better use of their time.
Students also take part in discussions, personality development activities, and sewa karya. These experiences encourage teamwork, responsibility, good conduct, and concern for others.
The aim is to create an environment where students can learn not only from books, but also from everyday life.

Learning for Tomorrow
Education is changing, and students need more than textbook knowledge to prepare for the future.
Chhatravas activities also give students opportunities to learn about technology, new skills, personality development, and practical aspects of life. The effort is to help students understand the changing world and become ready to face new opportunities with confidence.
The people guiding and caring for students are also trained from time to time through Prashikshan Varg. This helps them understand the needs of students better and improve the way they support and guide them.

A Story of Opportunity
From a Village in Telangana to Aeronautical Engineering
Bilugu Manoj, from Dudekulapalli village in Bhupalpally district of Telangana, had studied locally up to Class 10. After that, continuing his education was difficult because of financial limitations.
With the support of the district Sewa Pramukh, Odelu Garu, Manoj was admitted to our Vidyaranya Awasam.
He completed his Intermediate studies while staying at the hostel. His interest and ability helped him secure a seat in Aeronautical Engineering. But once again, financial difficulties came in the way of continuing his higher education.
Seeing his interest in studies and his determination to move ahead, the committee members provided him with financial assistance.
Today, Manoj has completed his degree in Aeronautical Engineering.
His journey is one example of how timely support and the right environment can help a student continue education and move towards a better future.
And this is not the story of just one student. Across Pan-India, many such stories are taking shape every day — students who received a place to study, guidance at the right time, and support when they needed it most.

Growing Across India
Chhatrawas has become an important part of the education-related Sewa Karya of Rashtriya Sewa Bharati.
As per the latest 2026 data:
191 Boys’ Chhatrawas
77 Girls’ Chhatrawas
12 Combined Chhatrawas
280 Chhatrawas in total
12,429 students across these Chhatrawas
These numbers represent institutions spread across Pan- India, but the purpose remains the same — to help students continue their education in a supportive environment.

Building a Routine, Building a Life
A good environment can have a lasting impact on a child.
Through a planned daily routine, regular studies, physical activities, cultural learning, yoga, sports, and other activities, students learn to manage their time and take responsibility for their own growth.
The guidance they receive from Karyakartas and Chhatrawas teams adds another important part to this journey. With care, discipline, and continuous guidance, students get the opportunity to grow with confidence.

Our Purpose
The purpose of Chhatrawas is simple — to ensure that distance, circumstances, or financial difficulties do not stop a child from pursuing education.
It provides students with a safe place to study, grow with values, build confidence, and become self-reliant.
For us, every Chhatrawas is a place where education opens the way to a better future.

Giving Education a Stronger Path
Chhatrawas is an effort to ensure that distance, financial difficulties, or family circumstances do not stop a child’s education. Across India, these Chhatrawas provide students with a safe place to stay, regular support, guidance, and an environment that encourages education, discipline, values, and self-reliance.
With 280 Chhatrawas and 12,429 students, the effort continues to help children move ahead with confidence and prepare for a better future.
For us, Chhatrawas is not just about providing a place to stay — it is about giving a child the opportunity to learn, grow, and move forward in life.
